The guzheng is a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument with a known history of over 2,500 years. It typically has 21 strings and movable bridges and is approximately 163 centimeters long. The plectrums (dai mao) used by players to play the guzheng are often made from hawksbill turtle shells. Players typically wear finger plectrums on either the right or both hands. These plectrums can be made from various materials, such as ivory, tortoiseshell, resin, or hard plastic.
“The guqing produces a sound that is pure and precise, with a deep resonance—at once elegant and charming.”
